Ultrasonic Inspection (UT)

Ultrasonic Inspection (UT)

What is Ultrasonic Inspection (UT)?

Ultrasonic Inspection (UT) is a non‑destructive testing technique that uses high‑frequency sound waves to detect internal discontinuities and measure material thickness. Ultrasonic energy is introduced into the test object using a transducer, and reflections from internal features or flaws are received and analyzed to evaluate material integrity.

Method of Inspection | Applications

Ultrasonic Inspection is widely used for the detection, sizing, and positioning of internal defects such as cracks, lack of fusion, porosity, laminations, and corrosion. The method is suitable for weld inspections, thickness measurements, and flaw detection in pressure vessels, pipelines, plates, forgings, and structural components.

The technique operates on the principle of sound wave reflection at material boundaries. Changes in acoustic impedance caused by defects or material interfaces produce reflected signals, which are displayed and interpreted by trained inspectors. UT provides reliable results with excellent depth penetration and sensitivity.
